Why I Love Wednesdays: Series or Standalone

Why I Love Wednesdays is a weekly meme created and hosted by Alexis of Reflections of a Bookaholic. Each week she posts a Why I Love Topic that she answers. If you would like to participate head on over to her site for the topic and the image. This week’s topic:

Series OR Stand Alone:

If I’m picking between either or I’d have to go with series.  To me there is just something about amazing stories and characters, and getting a chance to revisit them and join them for a different adventure.  With any well-developed, likable character, I almost feel as if they are my friend.  And because of that I’m ecstatic when I get to know more about their lives, trials, loves, and internal struggles.  I love to watch them grow and learn, and I love to see them fulfill their book destinies.  So while stand alone books are great, I do love all the elements a series can give a reader.  Be it YA, Romance, or Paranormal, a series gives you something to look forward to.

I’m a fan of series books, but I’m also a firm believer that each book in a series needs to be strong enough to stand on it’s own…as it’s own story. That is why I hate cliffhangers. They are such a ploy!

But yes, when I fall for the characters, I just want to spend as much time with them as possible.

  2. Some series are sooooooo good (like Harry Potter). Some are so unnecessary and feel forced. But I feel your love 😉

  3. When you fall in love with a good series it feels rewarding. I feel more invested in the characters lives, and I really enjoying reading their progress.

Can you delete my last comment and add this one? I typed my link in wrong. LOL!!!
I love them too! I love love love moving the characters into my life but I hate the wait. I try to start a series after the four book is out so the wait is not to crazy!

I’ve found recently that I do the same. And when the Borders around me went out of business, I was able to get a few complete series, or at least most of them so I wouldn’t have to wait and could read the next one when I chose.

  5. Yes I have to agree that a series gives you something to look forward to. It is really such a hard choice.

Oh and I agree with Missie… cliff hangers get on my nerves. They make me feel manipulated.
