“First Meet” Scene:
My First Meet scene is from Josephine and the Soldier by Beverly Jenkins.  Now Josephine and Adam know each other from childhood.  But when Adam comes back form the war he introduces himself to Josephine not knowing who she is because she’s all grown up.  The scene is quite cute.
As Jo neared, however, she realized that she knew him.  Although she hadn’t seen him since he was twelve, Jo was ready to bet every hair iron she owned that the golden-skinned man with the golden brown eyes was her brother’s friend, Adam Morgan.  Happiness and surprise filled her.  What was he doing here?
“Hello, Beautiful.”
Jo stopped, then stared up into the handsome, sculpted face of Adam Morgan.  Beautiful?!  When she was young, her brother and his friends called her nothing but “Pest.”
Adam regained her attention by adding, “I lived in Whitaker for ten years.  I don’t ever remember seeing you back then.”
Jo blinked.  He didn’t recognize her?!  She almost burst into laughter but decided to play along.  She’d tease him later.  “I’ve lived here all of my life.”
“Really?  I would remember someone as lovely as you.”
“I bet you say that to all of the girls.”
He clutched his heart.  “You wound me mademoiselle.  Weren’t the Rebs enough?”
Jo giggled in spite of herself.  He was as silly as ever.
He then introduced himself.  “I’m Adam Morgan.”
     “Pleased to meet you, Adam.”
     Silence.
“Now you’re supposed to give me your name,” he pointed out.
“Ah, a woman of mystery.  I like intrigue.”
     “Do you?”
     His voice softened.  “I do.”
A Page or two later:
Adam turned to Cecelia and asked, “Where’s Jojo?  Is she back at the house?”
Cecelia smiled.  “No, this is Jo, right here.”
Jo stepped to her mother’s side and let him get a good look.
     Adam blinked.
     Jo smiled smugly.
Adam studied her as if he’d never seen her before.  “You can’t be Jojo.”
He had such conviction in his vice, Jo was almost offended.  “Why can’t I be?”
“Because–” Adam had trouble finding the words he wanted to say.
“Good answer.  Where did you say you went to school again?”
His eyes sparkled, and he tossed back, “Pest.”  The nickname came out so effortlessly, Adam had to laugh, as did Cecelia and the rest.

  1. Oh this is so cute! I love it! I loved how he didn’t recognize her but it was also cute when he called her about her childhood nickname. This is one instance where being called “Pest” means you threw a boy off his game. Lol. This book is already on my list. I need to get with it already.

  2. You know which is the first that comes to mind, Jacob and Bella.

  3. I hope you’re enjoying this one.

Ooohhhh, I remember reading your review on this book and hearing about how much you loved it, so I’m glad that this is the one you decided to share a scene from this week! I honestly LOVE reading the scene where the characters first meet each other (whether it’s irritation first or just plain funny!) — because first impressions always matter, right? 😉 As long as we hopefully avoid instalove!

Thanks a million for sharing this, Jade! It’s super duper SWEET <3

Glad you enjoyed the scene. And yes I did love this book. So much that I got the one before it about Jo’s brother. I didn’t even realize it was kind of a series.

  5. Awe! This is exactly the way I always imagine the scene playing out if I ever run into my childhood crush, except he would call me Missy Pissy! LOL

  6. I love that!! How cute and sweet? I love that she didn’t “stalk off mad” as most of the women in the books I read do, but played along. Love it!

I love first meet. I think all romance fans love it because it’s such a poignant moment in the life of the main characters, right? Live is never the same after that moment, whether is a “meet cute” or a dramatic first impression, it doesn’t matter. I love it!
