Aliens have attacked Earth twice and almost destroyed the human species.  To make sure humans win the next encounter, the world government has taken to breeding military geniuses–and then training them in the arts of war….The early training not surprisingly, takes the form of ‘games’….Ender Wiggin is a genius among geniuses; he wins all the games….He is smart enough to know that time is running out.  But is he smart enough to save the planet?

My Thoughts

A single work of brilliance.  I was completely awed by Ender Wiggin and his ability to always find a solution in the face of extreme adversity.  His genius charmed me and his conflicting feelings about his brother, and his fear of being like him was oddly endearing.  Ender’s struggle with himself and his identity is so real that you can’t help but feel for him, and it makes you want to root for him.

The one thing about this book I could have done without was the side plot involving Ender’s older brother and sister.  I understand they are both geniuses as well, but the plot to take over Earth and the way they went about the execution of it was a bit ridiculous and silly.  Besides needing Valentine to continue to motivate Ender, there really was no need to even continue the story of the brother and sister.  Take their side plot out of the book and it would be just as good, maybe even better.

Anyway, LOVED the book.  Although it’s been nearly a year since M. Christine’s recommendation, I really enjoyed it, so thanks!
