Let’s Talk About Review Indexes
Thursday May 16, 2013 at 12:34 pm |

Being a book blogger it’s imperative to offer your readers a simpler way of finding specific reviews that you have written for however long you have been book blogging.  There are many different ways of organizing your review index.  Some bloggers use one or all of the following examples:

  • By Author
  • By Title
  • By Rating
  • By Date

Regardless of the ways in which you choose to organize your review index, keeping up with it can be a MAJOR pain in the patootie.  Manually adding and linking your reviews within your indexes frankly can be annoying and time consuming,  especially if you’ve forgotten to do it in a while.  Well thanks to the amazing Ashley at Nosegraze.com, I have found a simple way to AUTOMATE my review indexes so I no longer have to manually add each one.

Following her simple tutorials HERE and HERE, I now have my indexes set up so that any review I complete and post is automatically added to the review indexes by Author and by Title.  And you can so the same!  Now as far as I know, these tutorials will only work for those operating a wordpress site, but I’m sure there has to be a way blogger blogs can do this as well.  It just may take some googling to see if this is available for blogger as well. *EDIT*  According to Ashley this is NOT possible in blogger and she explains in further detail in my comment section and through the link she posted in comments.  Sorry if I got any blogger users hopes up.

Anyway, I just wanted to pass along the information because it has already made my blogging life so much easier.  And Ashley is so nice and helpful if there is anything you don’t understand or something you have a question about!  So go ahead and give it a try, I think you’ll find this information very helpful.

I’m so glad you got it working and that it’s been helpful for you!! 🙂

Unfortunately this isn’t possible on Blogger though. I do an in-depth explanation of why here: Why is the Ultimate Book Blogger Plugin (and other plugins) for WordPress Only?

The gist of it is that you can’t edit the back-end of Blogger. In my tutorial you use Advanced Custom Fields to add little input boxes on the post creation page. That’s necessary in order to do the sorting of information. But on Blogger you don’t have permission to edit the admin interface in any way. And additionally, the actual processing and sorting of the information requires the programming language PHP. But since Blogger is a free platform, you’re not allowed to use PHP!

So unfortunately it’s not possible. 🙁

Just one more reason to convince people to switch to WordPress though! 😉

Great tip/article. I keep meaning to offer an alphabetical viewing of my reviews as well, but havent’ done it yet. Currently I have it offered by genre.

Hi Erin! I think people are appreciative as long as a review index (in any form) is offered. But alphabetical seems to be easier for most people.

  4. I index manually and it isn’t too bad. I’ve got a weekly to-do blog maintenance list already. If I keep up with it weekly, I’m only adding 2-3 new links a week. I know it could be zero if I was on WordPress.org, but 2-3 isn’t too bad for me.

I’m just lazy Alexis! And I FORGET to add my links and then have to go back and add a ton in one sitting. I’m trying to avoid that from now on!

What?! Okay, clearly I need to look into this!!!!!

    Thanks girl. xoxo!

  6. I need to really really work on this one.
