Richard Mayhew is a plain man with a good heart – and an ordinary life that is changed forever on a day he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. From that moment forward he is propelled into a world he never dreamed existed – a dark subculture flourishing in abandoned subway stations and sewer tunnels below the city – a world far stranger and more dangerous than the only one he has ever known…

My Thoughts

I have tried and tried with Neil Gaiman, but I fear that I will never be one of those fangirls who dies for his work.  So far this is the third book I’ve read by Mr. Gaiman and it’s the third book I wish I’d never read, was bored to tears, and just wished it were over.  I just don’t like his style and find his stories incredibly boring and uneventful.

Richard Mayhew is a go with the flow kind of guy.  But one night he helps a woman (I guess she’s a woman as she is never really described) from “London below”, and forever has his world turned upside down.  Because Richard cannot go back to his world, he finds Door and follows her on her quest to find out why her family was killed.

What ensues is a whole lot of ambling from one place to another with no real purpose or goals.  The villains are cookie cutter and try way too hard to be amusing and clever.  It was pretty easy to figure out the plot of this one and really I was not entertained.  Richard infuriated me as he really just let life happen to him.  As for the other characters, boring and pointless.

I was just left completely bored and unsatisfied.  If you’re a Gaiman fan, go for it.  But I just cannot get into his works and have decided this book is the end of the line for me.
