A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin: The Re-Read

gameofthrones-grmSo far with the Song of Ice and Fire series I’m read up through A Storm of Swords.  And I’m so excited for the television series to be returning on March 31.  I’m anxious to see how they interpret this season from the book and how closely it does or does not follow.  While the first season followed the first book closely, the second season veered from the book in many aspects.

Anywho, being that  I’m read up through book three, re-reading A Game of Thrones was like a REVELATION!  Since I’m now familiar with all the characters and situations, reading through it and seeing people appear or mentioned for the first time sheds so much light on many of the events to come, and the beginnings of so many things.  I fee like I have so much more clarity on the action and on many smaller characters whose motivations, intentions, and stories will come into play in later books.

So with that said I’m excited to re-read the next two books and then finally start on A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.  And considering going through these books again, I have some predictions or guesses about events passed and ones to come.  None of them should spoil what most people already know about the story, but read on at your own risk!

  • I predict that Lisa Arryn’s sickly child Lord Robert of the Vail, was REALLY fathered by little Peter Baelish.  Otherwise known as Littlefinger.  And I think Jon Arryn found out before his untimely death!
  • I predict that Syrio Forel, Arya’s dancing master (sword fighting teacher), is ALSO the faceless man from Braavos known as Jacquen Hagar.
  • I predict whoever Bran is following underground IS his Uncle, OR has his Uncle Benjen.

Okay, that’s it for now.  I’ll keep at it and see if any of my guesses or predictions are right.  And I’m sure I’ll come up with more when I re-read A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords!  If you haven’t read the books, I do hope that one day you’ll try them because they are BEYOND good.  Seriously, some of the BEST books I’ve EVER read!  And if not I hope you’ll at least tune into the series this March!  It really is an EXCELLENT show!

  3. Grr… I need to read this now. Since you’ve read Gone with the Wind, I feel like I need to do something fantastic. What do you think?

  4. This sounds like a really fun re-read! I haven’t read this series, but love Robert Jordan’s similarly long Wheel of Time series and I always enjoy going back to the beginning to re-meet everyone 🙂
